Rules and values

At CARE we are committed to creating an environment that facilitates learning and productive discussions for all participants. To guarantee that, we would like to stress a few key principles that we ask every participant to follow:

  • Respect the diversity of opinion: We value critical thinking and constant questioning of our actions. We strive to create a space for thoughtful discussions, but accept that there is a possibility of thoughtful disagreements.
  • Don’t be an asshole: Express your opinions in a way that is compassionate and respectful towards other participants, respecting their boundaries. At the same time we strive for discussions that make us uncomfortable, challenge our thinking, make us reconsider held beliefs.
  • Look out for one another and try to help if you are able to.

The following behavior will not be tolerated:

  • Offensive, disruptive, or discriminatory actions (including actions toward gender identity, sexual orientation, beliefs, race, ethnicity, disability, citizenship or age) or communication.
  • Unwanted sexual attention, or sexual harassment of any kind.

We understand that communicating in person and online is difficult and prone to creating assumptions about the interlocutor’s motives or beliefs. We ask you to assume positive intentions and allow yourself space to discuss behaviour or opinions that you find troubling.

If you’re asked to stop a behaviour that’s causing a problem for someone, we expect you to stop immediately.

Registration and admission

CARE is a closed event for people who work or volunteer in animal advocacy and related fields (research, funding, policy, adjacent movements). It is not open to the general public. The organiser is Stowarzyszenie Otwarte Klatki (Anima International).

  1. Accurate information. When you register, you must give true and complete information about yourself, your role and your organisation, and keep it up to date. We may check it against public sources and may contact the organisation you name to confirm your affiliation (see our Privacy policy).
  2. Verification. If we ask you to confirm or evidence your role or affiliation, please reply within 7 days, or within 48 hours if the event is less than a week away. If you don’t reply, we treat the information as unverified.
  3. When we refuse or cancel a registration. We may refuse a registration, cancel it before the event, or refuse entry on the day, where:
    a) the information you gave is false, misleading, or remains unverified after we have asked you to confirm it;
    b) you do not meet the eligibility criteria above;
    c) we have reasonable grounds to believe you intend to attend for a purpose incompatible with the event — for example surveillance, information-gathering or recruitment on behalf of organisations opposed to the aims of the conference, or sales activity not agreed with us;
    d) you have breached this Code of Conduct, or were removed from or refused entry to a previous CARE or a comparable event;
    e) we have reasonable grounds to believe your attendance would put the safety or wellbeing of other participants, speakers or staff at risk.
    We may also remove you from the event and the event platform for breaching the Code of Conduct during the event.
  4. Refunds. If we cancel your registration before the event under points a) to e), we refund the full ticket price within 14 days, to the payment method you used. If you are removed during the event for breaching the Code of Conduct, the ticket is not refunded.
  5. Your other costs. Please book travel and accommodation that can be changed or refunded, or insure them. If we cancel your registration for something you are responsible for (points a) to d)), you bear any travel and accommodation costs you have incurred.
  6. How we decide. We will tell you by email which of the grounds above we are acting on. We are not obliged to share the underlying information or its source, particularly where that could identify someone who raised a concern. You may ask for the decision to be reviewed by writing to [email protected] within 7 days; a different member of the team will look at it.
  7. What we never do. We never refuse or cancel a registration on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, disability, citizenship, nationality or age.
  8. These terms apply to every registration, including free and discounted tickets, and to all related social events.

By registering to attend the event, you confirm that you have read and accept these Rules and values, including the Code of Conduct and the Registration and admission terms. The Code of Conduct applies at the conference, at all related social events, and on the event platform before, during and after the conference.
